Changes in v5.4
New:

Previous 5.2.0 version was a great GAOTD success. Installing today’s 5.4.1 version is assumably another success, although I don’t immediately see any difference.

Whoa…my Norton Internet Security 2009 “removed” a program called “we2202.tmp”, which seems to be from this AnVir release. The details from the Norton “Sonar” component says two programs were killed: we2202.tmp and virustotalupload.exe.
Given AnVir’s positive reputation, and the fact that it seems to be functioning normally despite the above, I’m going to hope that there were false positives.

I was suspicious when my K9 Web Protection blocked http://www.anvir.com as a “Spyware source”.
My suspicious was aroused even further when Kaspersky prompted me three times with suspected trojans when trying to install this software:

I am currently trying to do a bit more research to see if this may be a false positive; I am also trying to upload this file onto online scanners such as Jotti and VirusTotal but I thought I should just give a heads up first.
I will update if I found out anything.
Okay so, as promised an update:
Scanner.virus.org and virustotal.com pretty much gave this program the green light. It must of just been bad luck on my part to get two false positives (potential). It might of been that Kaspersky was detecting a preventative trojan signature, not sure.
As a side note, on download.com there is a “AnVir Task Manager 5.4.1 Free”. Gunna check that out to see if its the same as what is given out today.
Not bad, tons of info - Very useful program.
Can’t see the current load of each core on my processor and can’t set process affinity either, other than that, it’s great replacement to task manager.
If this is your kind of thing, look up “sysinternals process explorer”. Sysinternals are owned by Microsoft.
The difference between Anvir Task Manager and Process Explorer is that process explorer is already free.

Jeez! How many times are you going to give this program away? This is the third or fourth time I’ve seen it on here (there have probably been more that I haven’t caught), and I’ve only been utilizing this site for about a year and a half!
As I purchased AnVir Security Suite, I won’t be testing the Task Manager, but this is one of my favorite tools. Very versatile, has features which Process Explorer doesn’t (although Process Explorer has some which AnVir doesn’t). I don’t have time to go into what all it can do. Personally, I can’t stand and don’t recommend any of the anti-virus, optimization, and tweaker settings, I turn all of those off / don’t use them. The security ratings are merely a guide, I don’t find that feature useful, although the startup monitor can be useful if it has a specific entry (the partial matches are generally useless). AnVir is good about fixing bugs, there are some minor issues which I haven’t reported (I report bugs in many applications, if I reported them all that would take all of my life), such as it’s tracking program usage but not folder usage on Vista in the tray icon menu. There are also differences in what it reports for activity compared to other tools, such as Vista’s Reliability and Performance monitor.
Just a small example of one of its endless features. When I tried the RecentX update, I didn’t see anything on-screen, but it was running. AnVir can list all windows associated with a process, whether visible or not, and you can change their settings. A window was listed as visible, but I didn’t see it, so I resized it. The RecentX toolbar was auto-hidden at the top right of my screen, where the Vista Sidebar is, and not readily noticeable at my primary monitor’s 1920×1440 resolution. Resizing the window made it readily visible (and RecentX immediately changed it back to its correct settings).

All in all, assuming that the other products received a similar increase the price is about the same as at the time of the last giveaway.
But this program is still worth it, a really great replacement for the Task Manager, have been using it until I had to reformat my harddisk. It can also be converted to a portable version, by simply copying the program and a configuration file (and slight editing of the configuration) IIRC - the instructions to do this are in a readme in the program directory.
I liked this so much that i bought the PRO version and have not looked back. This is an excellent piece if software, that enables you to see and have control over all your systems processes, ie. whats running, whats starting automatically, how much system resources are being utilised and you have the ability to modify or stop them (use with care here). A very comprehensive and well thought out application, a big thumbs up from me.
It seems this product deserves a little patchwork before effectively being released.
Well, GaD-guinea-pigs, provided key on Giveaway dialog box will NOT work as is. Don’t worry, this is a pre-registered version, at least.
But what really amazed me is getting a FULLY RUSSIAN INTERFACE WHEN CLICKING TOOLS > TWEAKER FOR WINDOWS. There must be a way to change that into an english version, but have no clue on how doing that this far.
-any russian-speaker who could enlighten us more? A word from the producers, perhaps…? A fix…? I guess no.
Another year ending and not a single sign of Hacker Evolution - ReInserction, by the way. Nor Biathlon. Why each and everything is being re-re-re-re offered except that? Direct Access and Advanced File Organizer *3.01*, I’m waiting for you to Christmas…
I got version 5.3 of this when it was offered six months ago or so, and like it a lot. It combines capabilities that are very similar to those offered by a couple great SysInternals (now Microsoft) programs, namely Process Explorer (a more capable replacement for the built-in Windows task manager)and Autoruns (a program/service startup manager), if you happen to know what those great pieces of software are, and in addition AnVir has a number things that those particular programs don’t happen to offer, such as one-click access to several Windows system administration areas, which is nice. Despite it’s wide array of hooks into various system functions (monitoring individual application cpu usage, memory usage, ability to set cpu usage priority level of individual applications, etc.) this app has been completely stable for me, has caused no problems in my system.
One fun/interesting thing about this program is that you can choose to have any or all of four monitoring icons be present in your system tray area that can help you get detailed info on what apps are using most cpu cycles, what apps are accessing the hard disk when it’s whirring away and you have no idea why, what your current network activity level is, and what apps are using the most memory. Although I find these mostly just useful for general informational purposes, they can also come in very useful if you are having a system slowdown or bottleneck and you want to figure out what the offending process is.
I’m not going to update to the newer version offered here today, as the additions it offers aren’t something that are particularly necessary to me, but if you don’t have an older version of this, I’d recommend getting it. You can learn TONS about how your system works just by keeping tabs on what processes are running, in real time, also interesting to look at it’s live process log and see what processes have been getting activated and doing stuff “behind the scenes” when you had no idea.
Curioser and curioser. Apparently they don’t check or understand the pages on their file dump sites. Or at least one of them. I went to the first site listed in their combined (for all their software) award page - Download 3000 - and all 5 of their software products on that site were run through virus total and HAD hits. That included the 4.0 version of this and the 4.0 pro version and a 4.8 free version. The hits: Panda found a suspicious file on all 5 and VBA32 found the following on all five: “suspected of Win32.BrokenEmbeddedSignature (paranoid. The actual entry’s probably bigger but that’s all the space the Virus Total report that Download 3000 posted had. Haven’t used Virus Total myself, so don’t know what the reports should look like. Also the 4.0 Pro version showed Prevx1 detecting an unspecified worm. Probably false hits, but not an auspicious start.
Only got up because the furnace blew out. Beddy-bye time for me. May check more into this later if smarter minds haven’t got to the bottom of it first.
My advice to everyone: Get this program! I’ve been using it for a long time and it’s great. See my capsule review in post #57 of my utilities blog.

For me, though, there is no question about it. I recommend Anvir Task Manager to everyone I know.
Looks like a good program but not very respectful. For example, I told it not to open their webpage, but my ZoneAlarm firewall still received a request to open FireFox from AnVir. I also told it to add no links to my computer (except start menu), but after going to my desktop I saw an AnVir link. I’ll see how it performs after a while, but after a couple of minutes it definitely seems like something I can use.

I see no real reason to use this program seeing as Windows Task Manager gives you all the info you need about the programs you have running.
Seem to be a conspiracy going on today with people raving about this unnecessary program, perhaps a sales drive by the company.
Ashraf’s report just became available to me. Seems they may have fixed the problems. Don’t know AnVir’s reputation myself. Maybe it’s just a lack of business forsight. But, if it’s me, I check what the sites that I post my software on have to say about me. Especially if I sight one of their 5 star “awards”. I at least check to see if they say I have viruses and post somewhere on my site explaining the false hits. Or, more importantly, withdraw the old version and replace them with the new ones. Probably nothing, but not the most confidence inducing of starts. #6 - Anthony and Ashraf, you probably already know, but this software includes the option of uploading a suspicious file to VirusTotal. That’s what the we22202.tmp apparently is. That may explain all the false hits. Still, I’m going to remain on the sidelines until better info. is available. Goodnight.
#11, Joe Momma, per-core loads are visible in the tray icon, if displayed, and in the icons on AnVir’s status bar (they show loads for my quad-core processor). You should never mess with affinity.
A couple of more items for AnVir, if they read this. Internet traffic monitoring never does anything at all on my system. Clicking tray icons for monitoring often doesn’t work.
There were a lot of red flags during install from threatfire and Comodo Internet Security. They were false positives and just precautionary warnings because the program accesses registry files and all of your system files. Antivirus programs are going to see this as a virus because it has virus like behavior. It is not. This is a helpful application that will replace and far surpass the task manager of Windows. Running on Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Thanks GAOTD team for this.
#17, Robert, that’s a strange attitude. Newer versions always include new features and bug fixes, and you’re getting it free. AnVir does utilize some CPU, disk I/O, and memory, but it’s an acceptable load on my system. If you use the menu extensions, you can right-click an application window title bar, select “Open AnVir”, and it will open AnVir to the associated process.
Installed fine and registered itself on Vista 64 Home Premium. Thanks!
